If you wish to visit the United States but are not a US citizen, you have to get a visa first. It can either be a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residency. These documents are crucial for your application process. A foreign official will conduct an interview with you to assess your eligibility for a student visa and may seek further papers, such as proof of:
- Transcripts, diplomas, degrees, or certificates from the schools you attended; and Standardized test results needed by your U.S. school;
- Your intention to leave the United States after the term of study is completed; and
- How you intend to pay for all educational, living, and travel expenses.

Student visas for new students can be obtained up to 120 days before the commencement date of a field of study. You will not, however, be permitted to enter the United States on your student visa more than 30 days before the commencement date.
Visas of continuing students can be given at any time. As long as the student is currently enrolled at a SEVP- approved school or institution and is registered in SEVIS. Continuing students may enter the United States at any time prior to the commencement of school.
