Battle Homesickness Abroad Like a Pro!

No matter how fun your abroad student life you think is going to be, homesickness is a real thing you are going to experience anyway. Every student goes through this – and by this, your educational consultant does not mean to discourage you, if all the other students have dealt with it successfully, you can do it as well, like a pro!

Firstly you need to reassure yourself with the fact that however bad it makes you feel at the moment, it won’t last. It’s perfectly normal if you are feeling out of the place, it gives you some solitude, to wonder about your choices and decisions you have made in life so far, to miss your friends and family and your life back in your hometown. Adjusting yourself in a completely different time zone with new people and culture is a legit difficult thing to do, but when you gotta do’ you gotta do.

Here is a list of few homesickness reduction techniques that can help you in your study abroad venture.

Be a tourist

Go see the most popular destination to get to know the city. Learn about your new country’s culture and history right away. Once you begin to feel ‘into’ the city, gear up to find ‘your people’, your niches, places where you feel most comfortable, restaurants with your favorite food and flavors. And everything else that could make a part of your everyday life.

Make a bucket list

A little research about your new home is very essential in order to settle there. Find new places that you can absolutely explore – best coffee shops around the city, 10 best local street foods, most famous cultural hubs of the city, 5 underrated places in the city, museums and what not. Make a list of these attractions or activities and challenge yourself to do/see all of them throughout your stay. This will distract you and keep you focused on the next adventure you are up to, instead of thinking about your home.

Taste local food

Food is the best comfort without any doubt. Once you find the best tastes around any place you begin to feel like home. Roam around the city, taste every local stall and street cafes, pick your favorite local snacks, latte, meals and what not.  Familiar foods are just about the right magic you need to add to your study in UK trip. After all, food is the best way to feel home anywhere.

Make your new home a home

It’s true that you can’t bring your entire room or yard from home abroad with you, but you can always find ways, both big and small, to feel like home in your new place.
